The U.S. is losing thousands of online and offline teachers every year because they are struggling to keep up with the demands of an expanding online workforce, according to a report by the Association for Technical Education.
The report found that online tutoring and tutoring by students who live at home are far less effective than tutoring at school or in the classroom, and that the demand for online tutors has grown by more than 10,000 percent since 2010.
It was released Tuesday as the Association of Technical Education, an industry group, reported that more than 1 million Americans were working as tutors online, while about 500,000 of those were doing so from home.
“It’s a very competitive market,” said Bob Zell, the association’s chief executive officer.
“People are really hungry for online instruction, but it’s really not easy to find and people aren’t able to find the teachers they need to help them.”
Tutoring by student groups online is also a growing business for schools.
The association estimated that more people work in tutoring now than in any other job category, including teaching, administration and sales, according the report.
Online tutoring also is helping boost online learning among young people and those who are not in high school.
The average age of those working online has jumped to 23, the group said.
A decade ago, the average age was 21.
Tutors said the online model offers a way to bridge the gap between classroom instruction and online tutor work.
It also offers a more affordable way to teach online than traditional classrooms.
It’s a big opportunity for a lot of educators, who have struggled with the cost of online education, Zell said.
Tutoring in the U.K. has also grown dramatically.
It has doubled in size in the past decade, from about 15,000 tutors in 2003 to more than 200,000 in 2011, according a report from the University of Exeter.
That report said the number of students taking online classes has grown from about 3,000 a year in 2003, to more in 2010 and 2011.
Tutor-led classes and tutored courses at private schools in the UK have also increased.
Tutored tutoring is a way for teachers to meet their students in person, said Zell.
Tuting by students in the United States is often a combination of both online tutorship and tutors teaching by phone or Skype, as well as classes that take place in public spaces.
Many of the students who take online tutored classes are from the U, U.C., and K states.
But in California, some students from out of state who are also taking online tutortions say they have had problems finding tutors.
“The fact that there are so many people that can come to a class in California from so many different states and different states have caused a big issue,” said Michelle Johnson, a 21-year-old student from San Jose, California, who has taken tutoring classes at a university-affiliated school in Sacramento.
“I’m pretty confident in my ability to get a tutor, but I haven’t been able to get to a tutor that is willing to meet me in person.”
A recent study from UC Davis found that students from outside the U., including students from California, are the most likely to take online courses.
The study showed that while the number who said they are tutoring students in other states has increased by about 10 percent, that number has actually decreased over the past five years, from 3,923 in 2008 to 2,547 in 2014.
The number of tutoring schools in California has grown at a faster rate than the state as a whole.
A recent report from California Higher Education found that more California students are taking online courses compared to the rest of the U and other states.
The UC Davis report noted that online programs are typically offered at least part-time, but some offer full-time or part-year options.
The U, UC, and K campuses have also expanded their offerings to include tutoring through online courses offered by private companies, as a way of boosting enrollment.
While some online schools are offering tutoring services for free, others charge tuition, sometimes for classes that can last weeks or months, and offer tutoring for as little as $50.
There are also tutoring programs in many states that are paid for through grants.
“They have been incredibly effective in providing a much-needed source of funding to support online learning, but there is also some real need to create incentives for tutoring,” Zell told ABC News.
He added that the state is also working on legislation to make it easier for schools to offer online learning for free.
The American Association of University Professors, the largest union in the country, said it is working on ways to make online education more affordable.
“Online education has become a critical part of our student’s experience, and we are committed to making sure that it continues to be available for students of all abilities,”
